The cottage lost a TON of trees in the recent storm.
One of the tree stumps, post storm.

However, I also just noticed that they deleted my last paragraph. ::grumble grumble::

OK, I don't think this problem is do-able.....
4(4 - 4a) = -10 - 16a
what does a equal?
4(4 - 4a) = -10 - 16a 16 - 16a = -10 - 16a 16 + 10 - 16a = - 16a 26 - 16a = -16a 26 = -16a + 16a 26 = 0a, which just can't be!

Existential sorts of questions
|
Dec. 19th, 2007 @ 04:32 pm
|
|---|
|
They aren't exactly existential, but they feel close.
* I've had a lot of recurrent thoughts.....
* Has it always been like this?
* Will it always be like this?
* Is my life how other peoples' lives are? (i.e. Do others angst as much? Are other people as sensitive? Are others unable to sleep because they worry about the state of the world? About their family?)
* Is what's going on in my life -- the amount of stress, traumatic-feeling volume of events, number of deaths, etc -- "normal?" Is this the average amount that most people experience in their lives?
* Is there a way to change the pattern? If there is, do I believe that it's possible for me? Possible for Loree? Possible for Kai? Possible for Marcelle post-mortem?
* Is the current reality really all that bad? The situation was bad enough for Loree to be hospitalized -- not that that is any litmus test, but I think it's a somewhat meaningful measurement tool.
* Is what I'm experiencing as painful (emotionally, physically and spiritually) just my PERCEPTION of pain -- and also my classification of pain as something that is less than desirable -- or is it actual pain (and something that should be seen as a warning sign to injury or illness)?
* What amount and type of pain is "useful" for growth and development? Is it always necessary?
* Is depression a choice or is it somehow pre-destined biochemically or socially based on upbringing and other non-physiological factors?
* What might it be like when I'm 70 -- presuming I live that long -- to have a life that only has Loree (presuming she's still alive) and Kai (presuming he's still alive) in it?
* What skills am I missing, or what component in my brain is not there (or not developed) that would allow me to register a sense of satisfaction with my own life? (Or allow me to feel more satisfied, more of the time?)
* Does happiness or joy really exist or is it only an illusion?
* Is the meaning of life to just survive it? Or is there something we are supposed to be getting out of this journey other than scars? |

successful birthday

|
We had a "successful" 50th birthday evening so far! Whoo hoo.
* Cat salad for Jesse (aka flowers for Loree which are now sequestered in the closed up bathroom). * Kai's homework done fairly painlessly. * Nice (albeit long) dinner at Olive Garden. Tasty food. Loree opened cards. We made xmas wish lists and give lists. I read a couple of chapters of the book she is writing. * Gift opening -- all good stuff. * Jesse played with the crepe paper streamer. * Kai read the book Laura sent Loree during our reading time. * Family quiet reading. * Film. * Goodnight kiss and laugh.

Laura's jerk chicken recipe
|
Sep. 15th, 2007 @ 10:14 pm
|
|---|
|
ingredients 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 3 medium scallions, chopped 2 Scotch bonnet chiles, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon five-spice powder 1 tablespoon allspice berries, coarsely ground 1 tablespoon coarsely ground pepper 1 teaspoon dried thyme, crumbled 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon vegetable oil Two 3 1/2- to 4-pound chickens, quartered
directions In a food processor, combine the onion, scallions, chiles, garlic, five-spice powder, allspice, pepper, thyme, nutmeg and salt; process to a coarse paste. With the machine on, add the the soy sauce and oil in a steady stream. Pour the marinade into a large, shallow dish, add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bring the chicken to room temperature before proceeding.
Light a grill. Grill the chicken over a medium-hot fire, turning occasionally, until well browned and cooked through, 35 to 40 minutes. (Cover the grill for a smokier flavor.) Transfer the chicken to a platter and serve.
